We are now in Montserrat after a lovely stay in St. Lucia. The local market in Castries is the most amazing place: endless fresh produce, little one-table restaurants that serve local food, and a wonderful selection spices, baskets, dolls, fabrics, t-shirts and pottery. It is overwhelming. The people are very friendly, even though they deal with cruise ship crowds almost every day!
The trip from St. Lucia to Montserrat was our most exciting so far this summer. We watched the lunar eclipse in the lee of Martinique and then got caught up in some powerful squalls - winds at 35 knots at times and lots of rain! Independence came through it all just fine; we love our radar and auto-pilot.
We have been waiting for the past few days, along with the rest of the Caribbean, for the weather to clear up. The sun is peeking out from behind the clouds today, so we will go on a tour of the Volcano Observatory and try to see some of this island before we leave early tomorrow for Nevis.
We hope to stop at a few more islands before we head for St. Thomas, arriving home in time for Thanksgiving. We plan to have Independence cleaned up and ready for charters by the middle of December. The bookings are starting to come in for Christmas; we look forward to a good season!
Fair winds - Pat and Pieter
