May 14th was our first day sail after our week long cruise aboard the Caribbean Princess. She is a little bigger and a little faster then Independence but someone else did all the driving and all the cooking for the 3500 or so passengers so it was a very nice vacation. We did a daysail aboard the Woodwind in Bonaire, super crew, really great snorkel gear and awesome snorkeling off Klein Bonaire. I highly recommend the tour if you find yourself in Bonaire.
We had a honeymoon couple on board yesterday, Blossom and Chris, both animal lovers and up for an adventure. It was a bit squally and we had one blast of rain and wind on our way up to Maho Bay. We were sailing pretty fast just east of Johnson's Reef when we spied a badly injured sea turtle, it looked huge and was obviously in distress; we thought it had been run over by a propellor.
As soon as we picked up a mooring I got on the phone to Coral World, our local aquarium, and told Erica what we had seen. She got on the radio to their boat, True North, and directed them to us. They asked us to go look for the turtle and help them find it as they were getting low on fuel. We got underway and headed back to do a turtle search, not unlike looking for a needle in a haystack but we got lucky and after about ten minutes of peering we spotted our victim. The only thing is, it turned out to be a love story not a tale of woe and injury! Our poor huge and injured turtle turned out to be two medium-sized turtles, definitely not hurt and obviously very fond of each other!! A happy ending and the crew of the True North were very nice and didn't give us a hard time for calling them out on a wild goose chase!
We are so grateful that Coral World answers distress calls and cares for injured marine life. It is a great facility and well worth a visit.
We do have fun on Independence!
